Mozart composed this concerto at the end of 1773, about the same time as the "little G minor" Symphony No. 25, as shows about as much promise of genius and fun as the symphony.
This piano concerto was a favorite of Mozarts for quite a while--the comic opera fun of the first movement with the thoughtful mood of this second with it's wonderful quiet phrase that end the movement is surely something to treasure...
Mozart tackles a problem in this Allegro, how to introduce contrapuntal elements in a sonata-form movement, that he was to revisit several more times. Being Mozart, it must be tackled in the very first piano concerto he fully composed himself!
